Ways to get stronger in math

In Uncategorized on March 11, 2012 at 1:51 am

Did you know that you can take high school algebra in middle school?  And if you do that, you’ll be set up to take college-level math classes in high school? Finally, did you know that taking high-level math classes in high school is one of the best ways to succeed in college?

Going down that path starts this year.

Here’s how you can get on the path to college success and scholarships:

1. Go to the Khan Academy website, and create a free account.  Khan Academy has videos and practice questions about almost all the math topics you’ll face in the fifth grade through college.  Once you join, add me as your coach, and you can learn all sorts of math at your own pace (and earn points and badges at the same time).

2. Prepare for an advanced pass on the SOLs by going to the Jefferson Labs website.  You can also quiz yourself on science.

Ways to Get Stronger in Reading

There is only one way to improve your reading level: by actually reading a whole bunch!  If you’re looking for a great book to read, here are a few websites to check out:

Books for fourth and fifth graders

Guys Read (go here only if you’d like to read about scary things, gross things, sports, fighting, or action)

The Richmond Public Libraries will get any book that they can for you!  Check out the Hull Street branch while Broad Rock is undergoing renovations.

And, if you want to practice your spelling, check out Spelling City.
